The Cloghane - Brandon Lughnasa Festival is a revival of an ancient pre-Christian celebration of the harvest. It's roots probably go back to the first farmers in the region. Lughnasa is one of the four great Celtic Festivals which divided the year. Mount Brandon was one of the venues for the hill-top assemblies in celebration of a successful harvest. This became the pattern or "patron" in Christian times with a pilgrimage to the mountain top in honour of St. Brendan, patron Saint of the region. |

Original and Reproduction of Crom Dubh's head |
The stone head of Crom Dubh, Celtic god of the harvest, was to be seen in the old graveyard in Cloghane until it was stolen in 1993. Happily a reproduction has been produced and although not the original it is an impressive likeness to the old head. This was presented to the area by sculptor, Monsieur Ronan le Gall, president of the twinning committee of Plozevet in Brittany with which the villages of Cloghane and Brandon are twinned. It can be seen at the Heritage centre, Halla le Cheile, Ballyguin. |
